Events Requiring Volunteers
Sometimes we have last minute changes or cancellations of events, so please email us to double check before you show up.
Every Sunday
- 2.00 pm - Open Cathedral • Civic Center at UN Plaza (Leavenworth and McAllister). Lunch is offered for anyone who wishes to participate. Worship attendance is not required to participate in the lunch. About 50 people gather and 100 meals are offered each Thursday (below); and 75 people gather and 150 lunches are offered each Sunday.

Wednesday
- 11.00 am - 1.00 pm Senior Program (St Francis Lutheran Church, 152 Church St) including activities, hospitality, bantering, supporting each other and a lovely lunch.
Every Thursday
- 5:30 pm - Open Cathedral (Mission and 16th St. BART station). About 50 people gather and 100 meals are offered each Thursday; and 75 people gather and 150 lunches are offered each Sunday (above).
Every Day
- 9:45 pm Night Ministry Walk Around, Come and join the Night Ministers for an evening and experience firsthand the ministry to our lonely, anxious and forgotten sisters and brothers in Christ. Call (415) 935-7862 in advance to schedule a night walk.
- Every Night: Crisis Line Counselors at Night Ministry
- Need a Speaker? Invite a Night Minister or someone from Welcome to come talk about what we do. The more you know, the more you learn, the more we can all work together.
Through The Year
- 10.00 am - 3.00 pm Free eye test/free prescription glasses open day at Saint Paulus Lutheran Church, 1541 Polk Street. This takes place every other month, the 1st Tuesday of the month - please contact Saint Paulus to confirm when the next event will be. The first 45 people in line, when the doors open at 10.00 am, will be seen. Glasses can be picked up in approx. two weeks after the test from Saint Paulus.
- St. Mary and St. Martha Lutheran Church offers a men's shelter and adolescent shelter. Please contact the office to get details of opening/closing time and answers to specific questions: (415) 647-2717
- Every other month of Sundays: Make Sandwiches for Open Cathedral, Saint Paulus Church, 1541 Polk St After service, around 12.00 pm, help us for an hour to make food so we can drop it off to Open Cathedral later that afternoon.

Every Tuesday
- 2.00 - 5.00 pm The Friendship Banquet at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1111 O'Farrell is on hiatus as of early 2020, yet this is only temporary. Please email sfcares@saintpaulus.org if you have questions of when we'll reconvene. For potential sponsorship inquiries, the cost per banquet evening falls in the $200-250 price range. If you're interested in sponsoring a future Friendship Banquet, please use the same (above) contact form.
Every Wednesday
- 10.00 am - 2.00 pm Senior Program takes place at St. Francis Lutheran Church, 152 Church St. It includes all the fantastic usual suspect events, activities, lunch and hospitality you'd expect that greatly support seniors. We are always looking for people to help serve meals, sit and chat with our elderly guests and assist them while you're volunteering. We can always use kitchen help from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm, and also folks to help clean up the kitchen for an hour (1.00 - 2.00 pm).

Thursday
- 5:30 - 6:30 pm Bring Food for 70 people to Open Cathedral Mission (Mission and 16th St. BART station)
Every Saturday
- 9:30 am - 1.00 pm, Hospitality Hour Preparation, (St. Francis Church, 152 Church St) Food sorting and some prep work. Come help us sort donated food and do some of the prep work for Sunday's meal.
Sundays
- 7:30 am Hospitality Hour Hosts, (St. Francis Church, 152 Church St., just up from Market) Servers, Cooks, Dishwashers, Clean up at St. Francis Lutheran's Hospitality Hour.

to 3.30 pm Bring Lunch for 100 to Open Cathedral Civic Center

Donations Needed
We
can always use donations of the following items:
- Socks - any socks will be great appreciated yet note, we do receive big requests for new, white athletic socks since they last the longest
- Glasses frames for our Vision Event. Any shapes, types, colors of glasses will be accepted so if you have spares or can coax a nearby optician or optometrist to donating some, we'll gladly accept these.
- Blankets and Sleeping Bags - new or used blankets and sleeping bags in good condition.
- Toiletries - small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotion; small tubes of toothpaste, packages of floss and small toothbrushes; small bars of soap or small bottles of body wash.
We'll
gladly pick up larger quantities of these items anywhere in San Francisco or
nearby. You can also drop them off at Saint Paulus Church, 1541 Polk
Street between 10.00 am - 4.00 pm Monday through Thursday.
